Info:

This story on the Serbian freedom fighters who stood up to Hitler and cost him World War Two is rarely told. In fact, I think this is the only film that dedicates itself to a man called Draza Mihailovic, the leader of the Chetniks. When Hitler expected Yugoslavia to give in, and join the Axis powers along with Romania, Bulgaria, Hungary, Italy, Czechoslovakia, and Albania... a bunch of men in the Yugoslav army stood up and brought down the Yugoslav Pro-Nazi government. They took over the government and spit in the face of Nazis. Well, this set Hitler off in a fury and he vowed to dely the invasion of Russia by two months in order to crush the Serbs of Yugoslavia. In fact, Croats and Albanians and Bosnians were more than eager to keep up their end of the bargain and join Hitler in killing Jews and Serbs. But the Serbs stood up to him. Those first to stand up to Hitler were the Chetniks. They were a band of civilans and Military men who were not Communist or Facsist. They simply wanted to have a country for the Church and King. So they fought against the Nazis in Yugoslavia and held down over 200,000 German troops in Yugoslavia. The most impressive thing was that Germany never intended to have so many troops in Yugoslavia. They never intended on going to war in Yugoslavia. And they planned to attack Russia in April (Because of the good weather) But Hitler was so angry he put that off. As we all know, Germany was just too late. By the time they finally got to the gates of Moscow, they had suffered mostly from the cold weather. The question many Germans in Hitler's cabinet were: Did we blow it by attacking the Serbs for two months, and not attacking Russia as planned? The Chetniks are great heros of World War Two who saved over 500 downed American pilots. More than any other country. The Chetniks eventually were ignored by the allies when the partisans came into power. The partisans were Communist and _link_ed with Stalin. It is no surprise that they were the ones who the Allies sided with. Some thing Stalin demanded that America stop supporting the Chetniks in order to support a Communist army in Yugoslavia. In other words, the Chetniks finally were reduced to nothing. In the end, the Chetniks... who were called Heroes by people like Churcill and Truman and Roosevelt... were put against a wall and shot by the Communists like Tito. I know this is not a movie review, but it gives you insight into who this film is about. You can't enjoy this film unless you understand the history. The Chetniks saved many lives, and lost many lives simply for protecting Americans and Jews. In the end, the leader of the Chetniks was given the biggest award by Congress for his heroic stand agaisnt Hitler. When most of Europe was giving into Hitler and helping kill Jews and others, Chetniks stood up to him. That is why this film was made. That is why I think they deserve more films. The film overall is not great. The editing was a little too fast. The beginning is a little confusing. And the acting at times confused me. Some Germans have such a thick accent, I didn't know what they were saying. But the ending was really great... and moved me very much. I think there should be dozens of films about the Chetniks and how they were one of the very few who stood up against a massive Military power and did it simply for honor.
